The German word for Munich is München.

After Berlin and Hamburg, Munich is Germany’s third largest city with a population of 1.4 million.

Munich is the state capital of Bavaria (Bayern), Germany’s largest federal state.

The Oktoberfest, a 2-week-long fair with giant beer tents and many rides, actually begins in September. At a typical Oktoberfest 6 million visitors drink 6 million liters of beer, eat the equivalent of 91 oxen, 383.000 sausages and 630.000 chickens.

The city’s motto is “Die Weltstadt mit Herz” (the world city with a heart).

Munich is the headquarters for the car manufacturer BMW.

In Munich you are within easy driving distance from the Alps and some magnificent skiing.

Germany's top soccer club is FC Bayern München, winners of 20 national championships and 4 European Champions League titles.

Munich is consistently rated among the top ten cities with highest quality of life worldwide. And it’s the most expensive city in Germany.

Munich’s sister city in the United States is Cincinnati.
